Career mothers and religious feminism

Roni Hazon Weiss

Red 4

After high school, Roni realised she was a feminist. During her BA, she realised that she was a religious feminist.  During her MA, she became a mother and kept working: as a teacher, educator, social activist. She juggles everything and expects herself to be good at every one of the jobs. There are many conflicts, and one of them is how to combine everything together.

Daniel Cainer: Jewish Chronicles

Daniel Cainer

Yellow 24

More stories-in-song from this multi-award winning Limmud favourite. Fresh from his fourth off-Broadway run, Cainer’s stories about his family are about all our families and all our foibles, lovingly and intelligently depicted. Smart, funny, timely and deeply moving, Cainer is a 'truly gifted musician and performer'. 'A must see' (Daily Mirror)

Do our genes make us Jewish? They f*** you up your Mum and Dad! (2 of 3)

Alan Silman

Yellow 21

Larkin’s poem did not refer to the fascinating differences between our mothers’ and fathers’ contribution to our genetic inheritance. Why is the Y chromosome so important in unravelling Jewish genetics and why to be a Cohen is more than a blessing? Jewish mums win because their eggs carry mitochondria but dads’ sperms do not-what does that tell us?

How can we teach the next generation to love being Jewish?

Yvette Zinger  Adi Rothman Berman  Robin Moss  Raymond Simonson  Shifra Morris-Evans

Red 5

Synagogues, Jewish high schools, Israel tour, summer camp and primary school. We focus a lot on the right way to get our kids into being good Jews but what’s the best way to do it? Formal Jewish education vs. informal Jewish education: is there a happy medium?

Instagram Judaism: vapid or invaluable?

Rena Singer

Orange 10

What can we accomplish by putting Judaism on social media? We will discuss how Jewish leaders, educators, and organisations can effectively use social media to connect with those who feel alienated or disconnected from Judaism.

Mazel Tov and cocktails: an hour of treif comedy!

Katie Price  Elie Kraft

Purple 31 (Bar)

Two of the best, young comedians on the circuit. Katie Price (BBC, Channel 4, LGBTQ Comedian of the Year Finalist) is unashamed to tackle important issues with a tongue-in-cheek charm. Elie Kraft has a keen eye for observation and "cuts an intriguing low-status persona" - Chortle. More Joan Rivers, less Jackie Mason. Leave bubbe and zayde at home!

Orthodox women writing their lives

Adena Berkowitz  Sally Berkovic

Red 2

Memoir, prose, commentary, plays - Orthodox women writers have been increasingly vocal in the last 20 years - meet and discuss the issues with two of them - Under My Hat by Sally argues that recent innovations by Orthodox women will shape the future of Judaism, while Adena's new Haggadah emphasises the role of women in the Passover story.

Performing Jewishness: the queerly radical Claude Cahun (2 of 3)

Aviva Dautch

Red 3

We will trace the life-long evolution of performance artist and theorist Claude Cahun. Born into an intellectual Jewish family in Nantes in 1894, Claude, best known for androgynous self-portraits, became a darling of the modernist and surrealist movements in 1920s and 30s Paris, and an active anti-Nazi resistance worker in Jersey during the 1940s.

Say "No to racism", say maybe to antisemitism!

Dan Marks

Green 25

Racism is at the forefront of everyone's mind when it comes to the football world today. Fans are getting banned, clubs are being fined - and rightly so! So why does no one care about cutting antisemitism out of the game, when it is just a more targeted form of racism. Why is one issue given so much attention while the other sits in its shadow?

Sex education ('RSE') in UK Jewish secondary schools

Sarah Bronzite

Blue 33

In the UK, RSE will shortly be compulsory; but what is actually changing? How will Jewish schools balance curricular requirements with religious values? Can families at faith schools ‘opt out’? What exactly has been going on in Birmingham? Can a human rights perspective help? And what do pupils really need to know? Discussion followed by Q&A.

The Shunammite woman

Bex Rosenblatt

Yellow 22

It’s hard to give good gifts. You have to really understand the other person and what it is they might want. We’ll be reading 2 Kings 4 through the lens of gender and gift-giving, exploring the power dynamics involved with giving and receiving unexpected presents.

The time of singing is come

Judith Silver

Red 6

A set drawn mostly from Judith’s latest songbook of the same name, inspired by the Song of Songs, our liturgy and life in general, abounding in harmonies and opportunities for communal singing. With special guest - and beloved friend - Mich Sampson helping to bring the harmonies to life and co-lead everyone in song.

Who and what is an elder? A Shema@Limmud session

Jeffrey Newman

Orange 11

The role of elder has largely disappeared in post-industrial society. Could that be why humanity has fallen out of balance with the rest of the living world? Indigenous societies have their elders. What can we learn from them? Are there elders in Jewish tradition currently and what qualities make an elder? Do you have to be old?

Yiddish poetry and the collective memory of the shtetl

Joanne Monica Kanarek

Orange 12

The popular image of the shtetl, though often limited in scope and historically inaccurate in many ways, has taken on a life of its own. Through the exploration of Yiddish poetry, this workshop will explore the different ways shtetls have been remembered, and the language that has influenced this collective memory.
