Between blasphemy and prayer - Paul Celan: the deconsecrated Shoah

Arnau Pons

Red 4

Celan wrote his poems when pointing out Nazi crimes caused discomfort, and rarely spoke of Jewish victims. However, in this context he was able to give his texts a critical content, sometimes blasphemous, other times subversive, which allowed him to take a free position against the ways of appropriation of the extermination of the Jews of Europe.

Def Jam, Bill Adler and the Public Enemy controversy

Daniel Heller

Orange 12

Def Jam Records brought hip hop into the mainstream, with help from Jewish executives such as Rick Rubin, Lyor Cohen and Glen Friedman. Public Enemy were one of the biggest groups to emerge, so how did their manager Bill Adler deal with a series of antisemitic remarks from one of the group, Professor Griff? Come and find out what happened next, and see what you would do in the same situation!

Does God want blind faith? Akeidat Yitzchak reconsidered

Joel Haber

Orange 10

When taught to children, this central Jewish text typically portrays Abraham as an unquestioning servant. But this characterisation presents problems for a modern sensibility, and contradicts his portrayal elsewhere in the Torah. Viewing the text anew, with close attention to language, we discover that Abraham's test may have been very different.

Samson Hart
