God & Shir Hakavod (sublime blasphemy)

Paul Freedman

Red 4

Shir Hakavod (Anim Z’mirot) is an anonymous poem by Judah Hechasid, describing in detail the One-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Described. Found in Ashkenazi prayerbooks since Venice 1549, it is a C13th mediaeval manuscript mystery that I solved in Oxford. We’ll wonder at its woven verses and pick it apart, so that our souls can sing and stitch it back together.

Neil Klugman is an intellectual but working-class Jew from Newark, New Jersey, who falls in love with a wealthy co-ed. In Philip Roth’s “Goodbye Columbus,” Neil’s summer romance presents him with issues of social inequality, racism, conspicuous consumption, and premarital sex. The symbols and themes are easy to unlock, but do they speak to us?

What makes our Jewish values… Jewish?

Graham Carpenter

The third season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is about to drop and if it's anything like the previous seasons, it will be a hilarious, zeitgeist, groundbreaking peek into Jewish-American sensibility. I love it. But we'd never get it here. Let's talk about that. Maybe we'll even laugh?

Without disappearing completely in Psalm 27: poetry to punctuate your life

Benjamin Stanley

Blue 32

We will retreat into Psalm 27, considering its call to radical vulnerability, its language, connections to the Days of Awe and Repentance, and its audacious inversion of a dramatic biblical episode. We will hope to learn some approaches to change from its challenges.
