Amy Winehouse: a Jewish gay icon for the 21st century?

Ethan Axelrod

Artist. Junkie. Victim. "A typical North London Jewish girl". Gay icon? We will delve into the music and mythology of this (in)famous Jewish singer, looking at her childhood, career and enduring position within pop culture. Is Amy our generation's version of the talented, troubled Jewish women who hold a special place in queer hearts?

Hasten the arrival of Moshiach by occupying yourself with questions of Torah. We will also play 'Who Said it: Taylor Swift or Hitler?' which the Talmud famously mentions as one of R Gamliel's favourite drinking games, and, time permitting, some other yeshivish games to enhance our minds and spirits.

In this session, come and learn about what UK rap is, how it is becoming mainstream and why it should matter to Jewish people living in the UK. How can we, as British Jews, contribute to a culture that is becoming 'the' culture?
