Concepts & Misconceptions about Israel, Zionism, and Jews

We will examine concepts and misconceptions regarding Israel, Zionism, and the Jews, providing tools needed to explain these topics to those less informed. Moreover, we will also tackle the core claims made against Israel’s right to exist, provide facts to respond, and ultimately show how these expressions of anti-Zionism are in fact antisemitism.

Daughters of Jerusalem: Talmudic Retellings

Twice a year, the daughters of Jerusalem dance in the vineyards in borrowed white clothes. How are joy and death bound together in this strange Talmudic passage? And what does it have to do with a much more sinister, earlier story?

Jewish meditation and breathwork

Jewish ‘untouchables’: the plight of the mamzer in the 21st century

Mamzerut is an ancient stigma in Judaism, handed down at birth through generations, which presents an urgent challenge for the whole community in the age of DNA analysis and big data. We will examine what 'mamzer' means, possible solutions, both ancient and modern, and early findings from Emma's research on mamzerut as a contemporary issue.

Listening to the Angels - Exploring 11th-12th Century Sephardi Piyutim

An interactive session exploring Heavenly descriptions found in Piyutim by the great Hebrew poets of 11th-12th century Andalusia. We will read High Holiday liturgy from Abraham Hazan and Yehuda HaLevi, and listen to recordings of how they are chanted in the Spanish & Portuguese tradition. Time permitting we will include Solomon Ibn Gabirol.

Transforming trauma into tolerance

Upper-class antisemitism in Britain 1917-21

Howard Webber 

Antisemitism and British politics have a long and nasty shared history. This session reveals links between the Amritsar massacre, Lenin, Lloyd George, ‘unnatural vice’ and Conservative distrust of Jews. It will unmask those who threatened to unmask 'politicians of Hebrew descent who use good old English names, and so hope to escape detection'.

In my enemy's tent: Dance Midrash

In this Dance Midrash session we will be examining the biblical character of Judith, looking at some of the art images produced by painters and artists, to help us explore through dance and movement, the ambiguities contained in her story.
