The title is deliberately tongue-in-cheek provocative! No, Noru will not be talking about ‘the conflict’, nor will he use the term ‘start-up nation’. Rather, he will try – with help from an Arab friend! – to distil the essence of what it means to be Jewish, and why the Jewish state is so popular with Jews.

In this session we will track the evolution of the concept of 'soul' through the Torah and the Oral Law (Talmud, Midrash, Chasidut, Kabbalah and Mussar). We will mention what rabbis think is happening to our soul when we are conceived, born and die. They will also guide us toward our spiritual core which links us to the divine presence throughout life.

What Jews 'sound like' has long been a concern for composers of western music. Not only (most infamously) Wagner, but also Haydn, Strauss, Andrew Lloyd Webber and contemporary films like 'The Santa Clause 3' have used particular vocal characteristics to represent an idea of Jewishness. This paper takes a whistle-stop tour of a few case studies.

Join Jessica to discuss some questions we often ignore: When should a hard text be left unexplained? How do you translate a blank space? How do you capture the music of an ancient poem?
