'It will soon blow over'

Ernie Hunter

Room 6

Fanny Höchstetter was a German civil servant who bravely confronted the Nazi regime, demanding and, unusually, receiving a certificate of forced retirement. Her story recounts Nazi actions and laws crowding in, destroying friendly Christian–Jewish relationships. When Hitler came to power in 1933, many, including Fanny, felt 'It will soon blow over'.

Death duties: Lessons from the Chevra Kadisha

Sally Berkovic

Room 2

'Six Feet Under' was my Limmud JDOV talk in 2015, reflecting on my experience of the Chevra Kadisha (literally 'sacred society', the volunteer group that performs the final rites for the Jewish deceased). 'Death Duties' builds on this, reflecting on loss and my own brush with death as well as Corona’s impact on the rituals of preparing the dead and reshaping mourning rites, and the challenges of ‘death’s housework'.

Developing inner composure: A Feldenkrais session on self-care

Emma Alter

Room 1

These last 18 months have been pretty tough. Even low-level trauma creates extra tension, stops us resting and digesting well, and keeps us on high alert. A good place to start improving our inner composure is to calm the nervous system. Emma will guide you through easy and gentle movements, in lying, to find relaxation for your inner self.

Evolution, atheism and the return of prophecy

Daniel Silverstein

Room 7

The spread of the theory of evolution and atheism in the early 20th century seemed to many traditionalists like bad news for the Jews. However, great mystics Abraham Isaac Kook and Kalonymus Kalman Shapira (rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto) felt that they ushered in a new era, which would bring our world closer to a shared consciousness of the One.

Exciting Vegan Cooking

Denise Phillips

Room 5

An opportunity to watch or cook with Denise. On the menu is: spiced cauliflower and almond soup; carrot and chestnut puff pastry pie and vegan chocolate brownies. Denise will be sharing tips, new ingredients and how to convert recipes for a vegan diet.

The Wolf of Baghdad: Memoir of a lost homeland (1 of 2)

Carol Isaacs  Lyn Julius

Room 3

In the 1940s, a third of Baghdad's population was Jewish. Within a decade, nearly all 150,000 Jews had fled. Today only three remain. The 'Wolf of Baghdad' motion comic (animated slideshow) is based on the graphic memoir of Carol's Iraqi-Jewish family's memories of their homeland, coming to life panel by panel with a soundtrack of Judeo-Arabic and Iraqi music.

The impact of 'Everyone's Invited' and the Jewish community: Tackling sexual harassment in our schools and youth organisations

Ilana Hutchinson

Room 4

Following the outpouring of testimonies of sexual harassment on the website, 'Everyone's Invited', we know the Jewish community is not immune. We will explore how to challenge harmful norms and behaviours that lead to sexual violence. What part can we all play in building a 'consent culture'? Is this an overoptimistic ambition or an achievable goal?
