This session will look at the various Jewish political responses to being white in South Africa, how they shaped their political engagements with the state, and their responses to the South African government's programmes of racial segregation and political oppression known as apartheid.

While it is common knowledge that Jewish lyricists and composers have been prominent in the writing of Broadway musicals, less attention has been paid to the way that Jewish characters are portrayed on stage. In this session we will listen to some excerpts in order to examine how these writers handle Jewish characters and themes.

Prayer, we are told by our sages, was instituted to parallel the temple sacrifices. Are there other ways in which we can make our lives today 'temple-based' - without a physical temple? And could there be a fractal relationship between the structure of the universe, the structure of the temple and our own lives?

The lecture will describe and analyse the developments of human rights in cyberspace, chronicling three 'generations' of rights: reinterpretation of existing rights (privacy, speech), introduction of new rights (right to be forgotten, internet access) and the emergence of new right holders and duty holders (virtual persons and online platforms).
