According to classical sources, when does atonement require repentance? When does it require suffering? Why? We will discuss two discourses by rabbis Joseph Ber Soloveitchik and by Yitzhak Hutner, exploring their common ground and where they differ. We'll ask questions about universalism versus particularism in the Jewish doctrine of repentance and gain insight for the contemporary theory of punishment.

For centuries, Jews and Muslims have shared Andalusi music across the Iberic Peninsula and the Maghreb. In this workshop, Laura Elkeslassy will teach two songs derived from the classical canon of Morocco, Al Ala, in both Arabic and Hebrew. Come experience the interweaving of Arabic and Hebraic poetry in this common ancestral musical heritage.

This practical experiential session will involve an introduction to the manufacturing of Scotch whisky, the halakhic principles which allow us to enjoy its delights, and an opportunity to sample. Please bring a bottle!
