'Hasidic big bang' – 13.7 billion years in seven days?

Igal Harmelin

Orange 14

Could present-day scientific theories about the origin and evolution of the universe be considered complementary to the Genesis story of origin, rather than contradicting it? Can we find ways of being informed and inspired by both? And can kabbalistic/hasidic understanding help us bridge the gap between the two?

Check your own mezuzah

Allison Barclay

Red 5

This workshop encourages us to keep the mitzvah of placing mezuzot in our homes and checking them twice every seven years by teaching us how to tell if a mezuzah is kosher. This empowers us to know before we buy a scroll what to look for and informs us on the proper home care and feeding of a mezuzah. Bring your own or borrow.

Digital pictograms encoded in the Torah

Adam Woolfe

Red 3

Biblical scenes like Adam in the Garden of Eden, Noah's ark and the Exodus are some of the most iconic images in history. But what if the Hebrew words of the Torah describing those scenes also encoded digital images of the very same scenes? Using computers, this seems to be the case! Buckle up and let's see the Torah in a completely new light!

Digital detox in many ways defines the modern Shabbat. But why is using electricity prohibited and was it inevitable? Is it 'fire'? What else is going on? We’ll look at the rabbinic sources through time, highlighting the different and surprising approaches and relate them to popular appliances. Our day of rest depends on it.

Reincarnation of a melody: nigunim workshop

Marine Goldwaser

Yellow 22

A Hasidic fairy-tale tells the journey of a melody, teaching that melodies have a soul and that it is the feelings of human beings that bring them to life. From this idea, this workshop will be a guided collective exploration of our voices, through the learning of Hasidic traditional melodies. We will develop expressivity and release emotions.

Spiritual first aid for humans who lead

Sarah Robinson

Blue 34

What does spiritual care for oneself look like? How do you look after yourself when your profession or your situation demands that you spend your time caring for others? How do you know when you are no longer effectively helping? Leadership is 24/7! What boundaries are necessary to lead from a place of health and how can they be implemented?

The Mediterranean – a Medieval melting pot

Robert Stone

Orange 12

In the Middle Ages, 'inter-faith relations' around the Mediterranean were a complex (and fascinating) mixture of civilized co-existence and bitter, bloody conflict. In this session we will explore stories that illustrate the rich and colourful interactions between Judaism, Islam and Christianity, from Muslim Andalusia to Baghdad and Jerusalem.

The Covid-19 pandemic certainly hit the UK Jewish community hard. But how much did it really change Jews and Jewish organisations beyond the short-term? In this panel session we will discuss findings from a number of different research projects on the subject of Jews, Jewish community and Covid.

What is Midrash?

Ishay Rosen-Zvi

Red 1

What is rabbinic Midrash? Why does it diverge from the straightforward readings of the Bible? What conception of the text lies at the core of the interpretive act and allows for such dramatic manipulations of the text? In this class we will read together rabbinic homilies and decode their reading strategies and hermeneutic assumptions.

Zionism and anti-Zionism deconstructed

Avi Mayer

Orange 10

Zionism and anti-Zionism are among the most charged yet least understood terms in conversations surrounding Israel. In this session, we will dive into some of the most hotly debated questions surrounding Zionism and anti-Zionism and explore how they have developed together over the past century and what they mean today.
