Living long on the land

Shai Cherry

Orange 11

One sentence summarises both the Torah and rabbinic Judaism: getting the Israelites to the Land of Israel, keeping them there, and after they've been exiled, getting them back. With global warming, living long on the land has never been a greater threat - and Judaism has valuable experience surviving the challenges of living in a hostile environment.

The Torah’s idea of living a good life: Is the Torah moral? (1 of 2)

Samuel Millunchick

Red 4

It's the classic question - how could a moral Torah make what seem to be immoral demands? Is the Torah a moral document? Does it purport to be? This session explores the notion of a 'moral' Torah and why a fundamental misunderstanding of the Torah's mission may warp our ability to do God's will on Earth.

“Created for life and not for pain”. What a sugya about breastfeeding can teach us about Talmud and feminism

Miriam-Simma Walfish

Red 3

In this lecture, I will take participants through a sugya (Talmudical passage) in Ketubot. I will explore three different academic tools that I used for unpacking the discourse of the sugya. This unpacking unearthed feminist insights about breastfeeding that can inform how we relate to breastfeeding mothers today.

Come and sing: Sephardic piyyutim and pizmonim

Isaac Montagu

Red 5

Piyyutim (religious sung poetry) and pizmonim (poems for singing outside formal services, e.g. at meals or weddings) are some of the beating hearts of Sephardic traditions. But spaces to enjoy them as a group can be all too rare. So let's come together and sing! Isaac will bring a selection of songs, but you're welcome to share your favourites too.
