Jewish, progressive and Zionist on campus? Let's talk!

Joan Friedman

I teach Jewish studies on a campus with few Jews, lots of progressive faculty, and lots of students from places where there are no Jews. I push back against the demonisation of Israel and Zionism, and against conscious and unconscious antisemitism. If you are a student or a faculty member somewhere, let's talk and trade stories and tactics.

On Tu B'Shvat, the four worlds and fruit-frugivore co-evolution

Rabbis and botanists have rather different ideas about fruit. We'll briefly explore the history of Tu B'shvat, before exploring the 'four worlds' of the Kabbalah and their associated fruits. The co-evolutionary interactions between fruits and frugivores give new meanings to these categories - and may help us find the missing fruit of Atzilut, the highest of the four worlds.

While Mosley marched, the Board issued pamphlets: a novel set in a morbid age

Ben Vos

Red 4

Writing fiction about the Jewish haute-bourgeoisie and Yiddisher mobsters in 1930s London made me consider how persecution, money and class warped, broke and reformed how British Jews related to each other at a time of great political and economic strain. Come to consider whether our communal memory boasts more bubemeisses (old wives' tales) than facts.
