Leo Szilard, almost alone, laid the foundations for Oppenheimer's Manhattan Project. From conceiving and patenting a nuclear chain reaction in London in 1933, he persuaded Einstein to write to Roosevelt in 1939 about the need to build the atomic bomb. Szilard's pursuit of the bomb probably saved ten million Japanese and a million American lives.
