Drawing hands and portraits - connecting us to our history

Join us for an introductory workshop where we'll explore the concept of line and start to learn how to draw hands and portraits. If you haven't drawn since you were in school, now is your chance to try. It will a fun session where we use drawing to explore our connections and our history and pick up a new skill.

Earthly bodies: what we share with our planet

Our sages teach that if someone kills a single person, "it is as if they destroyed an entire world". So if individual humans are compared to the earth itself, what if we flip the metaphor and imagine the earth as a human being? We'll look at texts that do just that, and consider their implications for our relationship with the planet.

How to worship your body?

This will be a feel-good session! Betty Q works with body issues on a daily basis. The session will describe how the concept of body positivity is reflected in Jewish text and culture. The session will be filled with tips and tricks on how to work on your own mind and body connection, followed by a Q&A.

Jews with tattoos: expressing Jewish identity through (consented) tattoos

Though considered by some as incompatible with Judaism, for others choosing to get a tattoo of a Jewish text, theme or symbol is a way to express and celebrate their Jewish identity. Using interviews of Jews with tattoos, we'll look at their motivations to get tattooed, choices of Jewish-themed tattoos and reactions from their social circle.

Participatory commemorations: co-creative design and traditional crafts in the service of memory

The session will present the lessons learned from an ongoing experiment conducted by Zapomniane (Forgotten) Foundation aimed at engaging local communities in Poland in remembering the Jews. The Foundation uses a combination of traditional crafts, new technologies and co-creation to collectively produce simple monuments with the local communities.

But it is also a part of everyday life, with most of our interactions involving some sort of political power dynamic. In this session, we will get to know some principles of politics in everyday life and how to use them to our advantage.

The Gazelle Valley urban nature park - an environmental success story

A public campaign to stop the construction of yet another neighbourhood in the heart of Jerusalem saved a herd of mountain gazelles from decimation and led to the creation of a community park, with public participation in the planning process. The gazelles are thriving and are now being successfully reintroduced into the wild.

What Yiddish can do for you! A feminist introduction to Yiddish culture

Join this interactive and dynamic lecture to learn about Yiddish language and culture - past and present, religious and secular. We will enjoy a sampling of literature, prayer and music in Yiddish and English translation, with a focus on the experiences of LGBTQ+ and women Yiddish speakers. No prior knowledge is necessary, and everyone is welcome.

“Jewish joy is wrapped in tragedy.” Fragility, trauma and dreams of joy are some of the topics uncovered in over a year of discussions for The Jewish Manifesto, which gives voice to the lived experiences of Jews in the Netherlands. This session provides an overview of our findings, with ample time for discussion.
