Darwin published 'The Origin of Species' in 1859. A few months later, German Biblical criticism was imported to England. Religious responses to Darwinism are, therefore, wrapped up in attacks on the divine authorship (and authority) of the Bible. Jewish responses tended to ally itself with the science in the fight against common enemies.
