A Jewish knight in shining armour: when rabbis were warriors

Mark Goldsmith

Red 5

When synagogues today recruit their rabbis, they do not normally question their military skills. Not so for Rabbi Shmuel HaNagid of Granada who was a rabbi, a Talmudist, a war poet and a field marshal. Discover the story and the beautiful poetry of this extraordinary Jewish leader of the 'Golden Age' of Muslim Spain.

Andre Aciman - 'Call Me By Your Name' and 'Enigma Variations', a literary investigation

Samantha Reuben

Orange 12

We will discuss and explore two of Andre Aciman's novels, examining narrative structure, the nature of memory, identity and love. Looking at extracts, characters and themes of romance, love and loss, we will try to understand these novels as both of their time and place and as universal. Expect romance, tragedy and laughter.

Creativity in our prayerbooks - then and now (featuring dragons and goats)

Paul Freedman  Vanessa Freedman

Orange 14

Liturgical creativity takes many forms, whether it be the poetry of piyyutim, the artistry of illuminated manuscripts or the innovations and insights of progressive prayerbooks. Focusing on the Musaf (Additional) service at the heart of Yom Kippur, we will explore examples of this creativity in mediaeval manuscripts and the brand new British Reform machzor (festival prayer book).

Encouraging parent-and-children Jewish learning programmes

Barry Radivan

Red 4

Barry successfully set up a weekly parent-and-children Jewish learning programme which ran from November till February every year, for one hour, one hour after Shabbat. This session will explain the programme in detail, discuss how it came about and how it could be replicated in your community.

Liturgies and sermons at times of disaster

Steve Miller

Orange 11

We will start by looking at the rabbinic liturgy for times of disaster set out in Mishnah Ta’anit and then move forward to look at medieval and modern Jewish responses to the pandemic and war. Although we will touch on the current war, that is not the main focus of this session.

Restoring the legacy of a lost Jewish master of the avant-garde

Helen Shiner

Red 2

Sculptor and printmaker, Moissey Kogan, was a highly regarded member of the Munich and Parisian avant-gardes. Vilified by the Nazis, he was killed in Auschwitz. His work was shown at the infamous Degenerate Art Exhibition, and was looted from museums and Jewish art collections. Helen will speak about her 30-year endeavour to restore his legacy.

Sponsorships: Corporate sell-outs or valuable innovation in times of necessity?

Mo Makin

Red 3

Sponsorships finance many types of organisations. However, several questions emerge when the prospect of sponsorships arise, including for Limmud and the (Jewish) charity sector. We address these questions, including: if capitalism can be 'vibed' to? How do brands and 'thought leadership' control the masses? What would the impact of sponsoring Limmud be?
