This talk is to promote a discussion on ‘Ornitheology; (Burrell 2024: Birding | Ornitheology) i.e. ‘flying creatures’ which Leviticus and Deuteronomy nominate as being 'unclean'. By the end of the workshop you should be able to identify unclean flying creatures, including those not in the Torah, understanding why they are not kosher.

Born in London and educated at Oxford, Leon Roth (1896-1963) was a renowned Jewish philosopher. He taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was Rector. He wrote Judaism: A Portrait (1960). He held that as Jews we must know Hebrew; as citizens of the world we must know English; and as citizens of Israel we must know Arabic.

We will read as a group a short text in Yiddish. Being able to read and understand Yiddish is required as there will no translations provided. There is a strong liklihood this year we look at Old (Western) Yiddish stories from before the 18th Century.
