This session explores how Cain and Abel were depicted in Israeli and Contemporary Jewish art, suggesting they emerge at particular historical junctures, in response to broader cultural and political shifts. Their presence in art of the recent decades sheds light on the confluence of moral positions, allyships and regard toward regional neighbors.

The Joseph story (Genesis 37.1 to 50.26) has inspired many creative responses over the centuries. The colourful sets of enamelled plates made in Limoges, France, around 1600 are an intriguing example. Exquisitely detailed, and technically challenging to make, they depict a story that resonated with people who were living through challenging times.
