Birkayim ve'brachot (knees and blessings): Yoga Poses and Movements in Jewish Prayer

It's little known that movement and the body were extensively used during Jewish prayer in temple times and that the poses used bear great similarity to the poses of ancient and modern yoga. We will study the original sources, including Torah, Mishnah and the Gemarah; and we will experiment in our own bodies and experience the poses themselves.

Sefer Yetzirah, an ancient mystical book, imagines the Creator carving the cosmos via primordial forces, elements and Hebrew letters. By contemplating the diversity of creation, a seeker can connect to the Presence that lies at the world's heart. We'll study passages from the cryptic text, and try a practice using the book's imagistic approach.

This charming classic film from 1955 portrays a working-class London community of small shops, open-air vendors and flea markets, where Joe, a small boy, lives with his mother, Joanne, who works in and rooms above the Kandinsky tailor shop. Joe is innocently and earnestly determined to help realise the wishes of his poor, hard-working neighbours.
