There’s an old joke about a Jew on a desert island who builds two shuls. But in the 1760s, the Jews on Portsea island built two rival shuls even though the community had only around 30 men. Come and hear about the time when Britain had two rival Chief Rabbis, featuring midnight raids between shuls and ‘a comedy of divided loyalties’ (Cecil Roth).

Everything from a sense of loss to embracing his diagnosis. He’ll add science (not a lot!), and give some words of wisdom which may help when you come across someone who is neurospicy!

On Yom Kippur 1893, Max Rubin, the cantor at Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco took a quick break from his duties to get some air outside. While doing so, he also quaffed some wine, had a sandwich, and smoked a cigarette. This session will explore this incident and consider broader late 19th century American, urban and Jewish history.

Tamar and Raya have developed the Tzlila method over the last decade and have taken it around Israel. A session dedicated to deep well-being, using the breath, relaxing restorative poses, accompanied by beautiful piano and sung words in Hebrew.

Does a convert to Judaism need to undergo a specific procedure or ritual of "taking on mitzvot?" If so, what exactly does that entail? And how might expectations vary depending on one’s particular context or community? We’ll engage with some of the core halachic (Jewish legal) texts on this subject, from the Talmud to modern-day authorities.
