Old (and young!) Jews telling jokes

Rachel Creeger

Red 4

We all love those traditional, Jewish jokes, and nothing brings us together more than laughter. This is an opportunity to share favourites and discuss why they tickle our kosher funny bones as well as the new Jewish jokes that are keeping that culturally specific format alive.

Eilu v’eilu (but maybe not eilu?): pluralism in Jewish texts

Batsheva Haber

Red 2

The Talmud teaches 'Eilu v’eilu divrei Elokim chayim' (these and those are words of God). But does Judaism always embrace multiple truths? In this session, we’ll explore how Jewish texts view pluralism, where multiple perspectives are celebrated, and where lines are drawn. What can this teach us about navigating diversity in Jewish life today?

Esther and Vashti: two faces of beauty

Jacqueline Nicholls

Orange 11

The two queens of the Purim story are often seen as opposites: the obedient heroine versus the proud queen, but their stories are far more complex. Through text study we’ll unpack their roles and explore how the Talmud’s interpretations of these women reflect deeper ideas about power, beauty and agency.

Beyond Sefardim and Ashkenazim - it's much more complicated

Clive Lawton

Orange 12

Most Jews, if they stop to think about it at all, recognise that not all Jews are like them. More specifically, many Ashkenazim know that some Jews are not Yiddish-using, gefilte-fish-eating people. But Ashkenazi and Sefardi is only the tip of the iceberg. Come to find about some of the many Jewish groups who fit neither of these boxes.

Purim, prostitutes and talmudic toilet humour

Miki Friend

Red 9

Embrace the seedy underbelly of Jewish text. Discover what antics those ancient Rabbis really got up to in their spare time whilst we drink, laugh and dvar Torah. This is a game of dvar Torah and drinking. 18+.

Tisch (Without Instruments)

Aviva Richman  Yosef Goldman

Purple 31

Gather round the shabbes table with Aviva Richman and Yosef Goldman as our voices in song transport us into a different dimension.  We will bring niggunim, from Baltimore to Iraq, that have profoundly shaped our relationships to prayer and to God, and invite everyone into a dynamic musical experience, at once meditative and ecstatic!

Tisch (With Instruments)

Red 7

Join participants from across Limmud for an evening of singing around a Friday night table, with voices and instruments. Bring your own tunes, or come to     be swayed by others' - let the music transport you to a different place.
