Jesus’s parables – stories that challenge, indict and inspire, often in humorous ways – become in the hands of some Christian interpreters vehicles of antisemitism. Hearing the parables in a Jewish historical context allows us to recover their original provocation without Jew-hatred. Test cases: the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan.

The real shock is that no one in Jerusalem was alarmed and still isn’t, six months later.
