Getting to the Hebrew root of the matter

How is a chaver (friend) related to a machberet (exercise book)? They both stick together through their three letter root ch/v/r. We will look at a few Hebrew roots to show you how Hebrew works so logically and relatively easily. The inspiration for this session comes partly from an interesting book bought at Limmud last year.

Making dreams real with Psalms 126 and 137: poetry to punctuate your life

“By the rivers of Babylon...let their babies’ heads be smashed…”...”A song of ascents in returning to Zion we were like dreamers…” We will look closely at each of these psalms, considering their grammatical ambiguities and confrontational outbursts along with some Rabbinic readings. We will see their invitation to hold onto dreams amidst pain.

The house of Jacob: the true story of unrequited passion and sexual rivalry

The tale of love, and lack thereof, between Jacob, Leah and Rachel is one of the best known narratives in the book of Genesis. However, there are hidden textual details that once uncovered dramatically change the story. A close reading of Genesis will finally reveal the painful, and very human, origin of the Jewish people.

Sholem Aleichem and Zionism

The poet and playwright Sholem Aleichem, was an active member of Hovevei Zion and became a fervent supporter of Herzl's political Zionism. He attended the Zionist Congresses, wrote about Herzl and corresponded with him. In this session we will discuss Sholem Aleichem's attitude to Herzl and political Zionism.
