A free nation in the land? Freedom of speech in Israel today

Esther Craven  Jake Goldman

Blue 33

Join Jake from the New Israel Fund and Esther from Yachad for an interactive deep-dive into the free speech situation in Israel today. How do recent developments, such as the ban on human rights NGOs in schools, and the country's fraught politics, impact the ability of individuals and communities to use their voices without fear or intimidation?

Building and constructing Biblical Hebrew verbs (1 of 2)

Rachel Montagu

Orange 11

A chance to learn about Biblical verbs, not quite while standing on one leg, but almost. We will look at the grammatical characteristics of some Hebrew letters and then look at straightforward (Pa’al) verbs, their tenses and forms and how they are used in the Bible. Participants must be able to read the Hebrew alphabet.

Communal candle-lighting

Shabbat and Hanukah Programming

Yellow 24

Head to Yellow 24 for a communal candle-lighting extravaganza, sharing the light of Chanukah with one another as we hear thoughts on the festival, take in some amazing Chanukah performances from some of Festival’s most exciting musical acts and, of course, light the Chanukiah as one.

Cruising is a complicated business - an explanation

Malcolm Ginsberg

Yellow 22

Sounds easy, but big ships or small ships? From the UK or is a flight required? Do you want children as shipmates or not? Lots of sea days or few? Nights at a port? Is kosher a requirement and should one book direct or via an agent? Are you single? Tipping or all inclusive? Malcolm (and wife Linda) have been on over 50 ships. Questions welcome.

Ech korim lecha? ("What's your name?")

Evan Gary Cohen

Green 27

A peek into our linguistic systems. Why can't those "annoying" foreigners pronounce our names correctly? What does this tell us about our grammatical systems, sound perception and articulation, and extra-grammatical effects on pronunciation?

Fighting Left Antisemitism, from the left

Dan Jacobs  Keith Kahn-Harris  Barnaby Marder

Red 7

Keith Kahn Harris interviews founding members of Socialists against Antisemitism. Hear how this group, avowedly on the left of the Labour party, have challenged antisemitism coming from their supposed ideological comrades.

How does it feel to be Jewish today in Europe's last dictatorship?

Vlad Zaiko

Orange 13

As a Jew born and living in Belarus, Vlad Zaiko will tell you what life is like in Europe's last dictatorship.

Jewish identity: stage vs. screen

Daniel Daniel

Blue 34

This is Bertolt Brecht vs. Stanley Kubrick, the Coen Brothers vs. Tony Kushner. Why are they so different? And can one explore Jewish identity more effectively than the other? We will be comparing Jewish filmmakers and playwrights to show how their respective mediums shape the stories they tell.

Language of light

Linda White

Blue 32

Open to people of all ages and abilities - come and engage with open ended materials! This session will have tactile sensory materials that engage the senses and invite creation. Rather than making something to take away, the light studio will have experiences to create and explore the concepts of light and shadow, as well as symbols of Chanukah.

Meditation, coming back home to the body and the breath.

Barbara Cohen

Green 26

We will enjoy some silent sitting meditation together. Stopping and creating a bit of space for ourselves in a busy day. We will use simple techniques, like watching the breath, to bring us into the present moment. No previous experience necessary, just a desire to come back home to the body and the breath.

_ Limmud Social Programming Team

Play the dreidel!

Shabbat and Hanukah Programming

Red threads, amulets, and chewing buttons: are modern Jewish women practising magic?

Lindsey Taylor-Guthartz

Orange 14

Have you ever worn an amulet? Or 'touched wood'? Or tied a bit of red thread on a baby's cot? Many people do these things, but are they kosher, or should they be condemned as magical practices? We will investigate Jewish and anthropological definitions of magic and see whether they match in order to come to a verdict.

The core texts for a desert generation: the Jewish tradition of radical innovation

Dan Libenson

Red 2

According to Rabbi Benay Lappe, the ancient rabbis left us a hidden instruction manual for navigating the transition to a new Judaism. They knew the Judaism they built would inevitably collapse, and they’d used hidden instructions in the Torah to build their own new Judaism after the destruction of the Temple. Let’s read the instructions together!

The evolution of human dance

Yosef Garfinkel

Red 4

Five major chronological phases are suggested for the history of human dance: courtship, rites of passage, trance, calendrical ceremonies and the professional dancer. The history of dance reflects the history of human rituals and religion.

The secret Jews of Majorca

Dani Rotstein

Red 3

Come learn about the fascinating Jewish history of a Spanish island where a segregated group of devout Catholics were forced to marry amongst themselves and have been discriminated against up until the last century. Some have decided to return to their ancestors' faith. They are the Chuetas and their story must be told.

The spiritual journey from Chanukah to Purim: Awakening the dormant within us

Jane Shapiro

Orange 12

While it may feel dark, cold and wintry, the Jewish calendar invites us to turn our gaze to the inner processes of growth that are waiting within for fuller expression. We will explore some sources from the Torah and Chasidic thought and poetry to help us begin to cultivate our own personal Tu B’Shvat and other winter-to-spring celebrations.

The unsavoury story behind latkes

Michie Yana-Berger

Orange 10

Latkes as we know them today did not exist in Biblical times, as potatoes were introduced much later, but their Hebrew counterparts “levivot” were referenced in 2 Samuel, in a highly upsetting incident involving the rape of Tamar, King David's daughter, by her half-brother Ammon. Come and learn this unsavoury story and hear her cries for justice.

Who won at Chanukah - the Greeks or the Jews?

Clive Lawton

Red 5

Over Chanukah, we celebrate our 'victory' over the Greeks, but who are we kidding? In this session, Clive will make clear how the Greeks won then and continue to win now - and they didn't even lift a finger to defeat us.
