Abraham Sutzkever's 'Ghetto Poems' and 'Green Aquarium': Poetic Survival in the Vilna Ghetto

Like scores of Jewish writers in the ghettos during World War II, the Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever used poetry as a weapon of spiritual resistance against the German attempt to annihilate Jewish memory and lives. The session will examine a sample of Sutzkever’s poems written in the Vilna ghetto and his surrealistic short prose, ‘Green Aquarium’ published in Tel Aviv in 1953-1954.

Balkan chronicles: countries at war - Jewish communities at peace

The session will give a short overview of the history of Jewish communities in the Western Balkans and will mainly focus on the period of Yugoslav wars, the connection between Jewish communities despite the wars between the countries and the role of Jewish organisations in helping people of all religions and nationalities during the siege of Sarajevo.
