Kings 2, chapters 6-7 tells one of the weirdest stories in the Bible. In this class, we will follow along with the biblical narrator’s stage directions in order to bring this tale to life. No prior acting experience required, but willingness to pretend to be a leper or a man who’s been trampled to death encouraged.

This narrative starts with a Quaker upbringing, continues with becoming a rabbi and leader in the Jewish world, and then becoming a philanthropy expert in the secular world. It is a story that is a living commentary on both Jewish and secular worlds of the 20th and 21st Century - with all sorts of implications for Jewish identity.

What can we do with the Song of the Sea? Starting in Tanach and moving into Midrash and medieval liturgical poetry, we’ll see how biblical poetry can be reshaped by new contexts to make new meanings. This session will have a chavruta component. All welcome, all texts will be available in English and in their original language.

This session gives you the tools to build communities where people feel like they belong, develop loyalty and trust that their interests are looked after. The second half delves into how we create habits and patterns of behaviour which embody the values of the community.

How do we deal with global challenges like climate change? Can humans really control what happens on this planet? Should we? We don't spend much time reading the book of Qohelet, but it might just offer us some alternative ways about how to see humanity's place in these challenges.

“And He wrote them upon two tablets of stone”. Writing was only invented a few thousand years ago in the ancient Near East. Judaism soon became a distinctly bookish tradition. This session will look at how early rabbinic traditions understood, conceptualised and prioritised the differences between Judaism’s spoken and written traditions.

TV sitcom ‘Rhoda’ was broadcast in the 1970s. It influenced more recent programmes like ‘Friends’, and ‘Sex and the City’, but it was much wittier – and more Jewish. The brilliant cast were led by Valerie Harper, who died last August. This session will include some fascinating details and we’ll view one of the funniest episodes. Come and enjoy!
