How odd of God to choose the Jews - a survey of chosenness in Jewish sources

Miriam Lorie

Orange 12

The idea of chosenness is so uncomfortable that a number of Jewish thinkers would like us to excise it from our tradition altogether. In this session we'll examine ideas of being "chosen" and an "am segula" [treasured nation], from the Torah right up to contemporary sources. Yes, we know your mother thinks you're exceptional. But does your God have to think the same?

The Glorious Revolution of 1688, where William of Orange supplanted King James II, led to the modern British constitution with parliament supreme, a free press, an independent judiciary and financial strength. This crucially depended upon Amsterdam Sephardi Jews, on whom William had been relying for years both for finance and military provisioning.
