Animals and the afterlife in Orthodox Jewish thought

Barry Kleinberg

Blue 33

An introduction to the (confusing) idea of the Jewish afterlife. If God is good, why do animals suffer? Should they be compensated for such suffering? Are animals sentient? Is sentience a prerequisite for an afterlife in Jewish thought? Three possible answers will be explored through a philosophical and textual lens.

Coping with antisemitism online

Debbie Lechtman

Blue 34

Antisemitism on social media is a worsening phenomenon. Now, more than ever before, people are able to disseminate their dangerous antisemitic ideas to a worldwide audience in a matter of seconds. How does antisemitism on social media lead to real-world violence? How can we protect ourselves online? And is it even possible to combat it?

Country houses, Jewish homes

Abigail Green  Jaclyn Granick  Marcus Roberts

Red 1

This is the launch of our new mobile exhibition, 'Country houses, Jewish homes'. It explores the challenges of telling this story in a context when thinking about rich Jews necessarily involves confronting antisemitism. We talk about marginalised heritage, difficult histories and the changing place of both Jews and the country house in British life.

Kallah v'kallah: our traditional lesbian Jewish wedding(s)

Oli Davidson  Liora Baram

Orange 10

Anyone who's anyone gets married twice... to the same person... within 15 months. From thinking we would have no wedding to actually having two, we will demystify what a same-sex Jewish wedding based on talmudic law can look like. This session is for everyone curious about alternatives to the traditional kiddushin-based Jewish wedding.

Looking at solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – beyond the failed two-state solution paradigm (2 of 3)

Gershon Baskin  Samer Sinijlawi

Orange 12

The two-state solution no longer seems viable. In this session, led by Samer Sinjalawi, we will present why we believe this is true. We will open a discussion of other possibilities, present some models and think about what must be done to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Psalms for the artist

Jacqueline Nicholls

Red 5

A poet and an artist interpret psalms, finding solace in these ancient texts that express the highs and lows of a creative spiritual practice. In this conversation, Aviva and Jacqueline will demonstrate their artistic processes and set out their vision for a robust contemporary Jewish culture.

Reckonings

UK Jewish Film Festival  Daniel Daniel  Irene Wise

Orange 13

With Holocaust survivors and a young Israel needing funds to rebuild lives, and West Germany desperate to rejoin the family of nations, secret meetings took place to negotiate compensation. Marking the 70th anniversary of the Luxembourg Agreements, this film sheds new light on this most difficult moral issue Jewish leaders have ever grappled with.

The future of Jewish education in the UK

Joanne Greenaway  Helena Miller  Robin Moss  Carolyn Bogush

Orange 14

Over the last year, 70 leaders from across the education sector and denominational spectrum have come together in five working groups to grapple with the key challenges facing Jewish education for young people today. How can we, together, build back better after Covid? We produced a report with key recommendations. Come and discuss our bold new agenda.

The invention of the 'goy'

Ishay Rosen-Zvi

Orange 11

When was the goy (gentile) invented? Much scholarship is devoted to Jewish relations with gentiles, but the category itself - which divides reality in its entirety in a binary manner: Jews and non-Jews - was taken for granted. I argue that the binary Jew/goy partition is anything but self-evident and first appears in rabbinic literature.

The naked rabbi

Jonathan Romain

Red 2

Laugh, frown, be amazed and argue with Jonathan Romain as he explores why being a rabbi is a wonderful job for a nice Jewish boy or girl. We will also look at the major changes in the rituals for births, weddings and funerals happening today.

The most important verse in the Torah? Our Jewish obligation to a life of social responsibility

Ephraim Mirvis

Orange 15

Ephraim Mirvis, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, will explain how the Torah obligates us as Jews to focus on issues such as the refugee crisis, global public health, climate change and international development. Participants in his ‘Ben Azzai’ programme will describe how Jewish values have inspired their own commitment to social responsibility.

Who needs a women’s organisation in Israel in 2022?

Gali Etzion  Hagit Peer  Bat-Sheva Margalit Stern

Red 3

Women grew wings, but we still need the strength to fly (in homage to Rachel Katznelson)... The year is 2022, there are women in almost all walks of life, it seems like we have got everything we wanted. But have we? Naamat, The Women’s Movement of Israel, takes you behind the scenes of the secret struggle of women in Israel, a unique situation of a modern state with ancient Hebrew laws.
