We have all been moved by Walt Disney's 'Bambi'. However, this is not the original story. The film is based on a book from 1923 by Felix Salten, a Viennese-Jewish writer. The book is seen as an allegory of the rise in antisemitism after World War I, and was burnt by the Nazis. I will discuss the context, the book and its meanings.

An exploration of the laws of synagogue ritual reveals that the rabbis saw synagogues as perennially on the verge of conflict and chaos. Customs such a cohen (priest) getting the first aliyah (call-up to the Torah) were implemented to try to keep the peace. We will survey synagogue practices that were instituted to promote good will and the anecdotal stories of unsuccessful efforts.

This session, with the journalist who broke the story, offers a deep dive into determining what, if anything, has changed since 2000.

As we find ourselves in winter, let's look at some of the Torah of winter, which will hopefully provide us with some warmth. Texts will be provided. Bringing a hot beverage of your choice is supported and encouraged. 'Ta shma' - come and learn!
