Mushrooms are mysterious. They capture our imagination like no other organisms. Perceived as life-giving, mind-blowing and deadly, fungi simultaneously inspire fear, wonder and confusion. Against the odds, they also thrive in urban areas – like Birmingham! Join us for a walk in the grounds of the Hilton to get to know your fungal neighbours. We will learn how to identify common mushroom species (including the Jelly Brain and Witches Butter) and explore the role of fungi in the ecosystem and Jewish traditions. This session will be mostly outdoors.

Drawing parallels to First Nations in the USA and Canada and taking critical legal approaches, I offer a new understanding of the role of ‘home’, particularly public housing in Israel, as a site of both oppression dispossessing and alienating Mizrahis (eastern Jews) of their Jewish homes and homeland, and of resistance and social justice redefining Israeli property laws.
