#Problematic: Attempting to redeem the most offensive talmudic stories: Problematic power dynamics (3 of 3)

Yaffa Epstein

Orange 14

Today, we find ourselves re-examining things we once took for granted. Who has the power in our society? Who lacks power? What do we need to do correct the injustices that plague us? Come learn some terribly offensive texts, and see if they can shed light on the issues we’re grappling with today. No prior experience with Jewish text is necessary.

Affirmative squatting – Mizrahi women in Israel correct past and lingering injustices

Claris Harbon

Red 4

Drawing on fieldwork among Mizrahi single mothers suffering from poverty who squat in public housing, my book shows how these women use their bodies to resist the Israeli land regime that has deprived them of the fundamental right to adequate housing and home ownership by preferring Ashkenazis. Squatting, I argue, is their means of distributive justice.

In 1914, seven million Jews across Eastern Europe and the Middle East were caught in the crossfire of warring empires. This is the untold story of that unprecedented disaster, and how in response American Jews reinvented modern humanitarianism and rebuilt Jewish life in Jewish homelands in war’s wake. From the 2021 National Jewish Book Award winner.

Jewish diversity in pictures: something to celebrate?

Keith Kahn-Harris

Orange 11

My recent collaboration with photographer Rob Stothard, 'What does a Jew look like?', aims to demonstrate the diversity of British Jews. But does that mean the book 'celebrates' diversity? Not everyone in the book would want to validate all the ways of being Jewish depicted in it. This session explores the dilemmas of portraying diversity.

How to crown your alef-bet

Allison Barclay

Red 1

Through Jewish history there have been so many versions of a scribal guide called 'Sefer Taggin' (The Book of Crowns), with such differences between eras and regions that each of the 'otiyot meshunot' (letter oddities) can show the provenance of a Torah. Glimpse a selection of how Hebrew scribes of the past interpreted these, rightly or wrongly.

Shabbat shaharit (morning service) amidah (2 of 3)

Joel Levy

Yellow 22

The amidah prayer lies at the heart of structured Jewish prayer. During the weekday services, each amidah is basically identical, but on Shabbat each of the four prayers explores a totally different aspect of the Sabbath. In this three-part series we aim to give participants a heightened understanding of the liturgy and a deeper capacity to engage with Shabbat prayer.

There are times and situations that demand of us to deny God's existence, that believing in God is tantamount to betrayal while denying God is what God wants from us. What are the conditions that demand of us to turn our back on God? Can belief in God be bad? Some rebbes answered with a definite 'Yes!'

The fall and fall of anti-Zionism

Vivian Wineman

Red 3

Today Zionism, outside the ultra-Orthodox, is almost universally supported in the Jewish community. It was not always so. A century ago, all the main communal streams were opposed to it. This most significant change happened in an age of declining nationalism. How and why did it happen? Was it a good thing? Come, hear and discuss.
