Cohesion and antisemitism in London

Andrew Gilbert  Adrian Cohen

Orange 12

Antisemitic hate crime grew more than any other type of hate crime in the last year. How has the community responded? Have the police, local councils, the mayor and the Crime Prosecution Service done well or not? What are the challenges?

Free synagogue membership for under 30s

Aaron Goldstein

Orange 11

Most synagogues are funded by membership income. The British (and Jewish) population is ageing and younger generations, whilst socially active, are more financially challenged. How can synagogues continue as financially viable organisations and be the primary source of a relevant and meaningful Jewish experience in Anglo-Jewry? Let's share our ideas.

Ibn Gabirol was gayer than you think – excerpts from Siddur Or veShalom

Isaac Montagu

Blue 33

The big news is that all the famous Sephardi poets – masters whose work you’ve heard in synagogue or around the Shabbat table time and time again – all wrote homoerotic love poetry. Yet you’re less likely to hear these on Rosh Hashanah than their other work. Join Isaac to learn about this phenomenon and look at some exquisitely beautiful examples.

LGBT+ social space

Dalia Fleming

Orange 10

The purpose here is to create a safer space at Limmud where LGBT+ Jews (including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, asexual, intersex, questioning and more) can come and meet each other to socialise. This will be a fun space to hang out and play games.

Laura Elkeslassy: Ya Ghorbati - divas in exile (3 of 3)

Laura Elkeslassy

Orange 15

A spectacular concert featuring songs from the great Judeo-Arab divas from mid-century North Africa: Line Monty, Zohra Elfassia, Hbiba Msika and more. Developed in collaboration with music director, Ira Khonen Temple, this concert weaves together the stories of Judeo-Arab divas from the last century with new performances of folk and sacred music.

Prison or refuge: rethinking the exile from Eden

Yael Jaffe

Red 4

In this session we will put the Garden of Eden in conversation with the cities of refuge - a feature of biblical civil law. Through this intersection of narrative and law, we will explore urgent questions around violence, justice and mercy. And together we will develop our understanding of the world as it was, as it is and as it ought to be.

Reflections on human and divine sovereignty in a democratic age

Mark Gottlieb

Red 3

The recent passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II is a natural occasion for reflection on the very institution of monarchy and its place in both political philosophy and traditional Jewish sources. In a post-monarchical era, can it be meaningful to still refer to God as King and Sovereign? What does it mean, theologically speaking, to call God our King?

Silent disco

Noa Gendler  Limmud Social Programming  Nicole Jacobus

Red 7

Come and witness the ultimate battle of the DJs. Three channels will play your favourite dance tracks back to back - pick a side or bounce between them, but the most important thing is to sing your heart out so that people without headphones on can have a good laugh.

Moshe Ariel Abel

Purple 31

Relax and unwind at the end of the day with a Jewish Sufi spiritual meditation, as practised in communities across North Africa and the Middle East for the last 800 years. Mint tea and dates supplied.

The four (and many more!) who entered Pardes: alumni and friends meetup

Sefi Kraut  Alex Israel

Main Bar

Grab a drink at the Limmud Bar (first one on us!) and join faculty, alumni and friends of the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies for some words of Torah, reflection and schmoozing, inspired by Pardes' 50th anniversary theme of 'Telling our stories'. What narratives do we bring to our immersive Torah learning and how are we transformed by our encounters?

The seven prophetesses (2 of 2)

Sybil Sheridan

Red 1

A text-based session examining the way seven heroines of Tanakh are seen in rabbinic literature and what we make of them today. Part two: Can a prophetess stand alone or must she be defined by the men in her life? The rabbis had their opinions; you'll have yours. In this session, we will look at what they say about Hannah, Abigail, Huldah and Esther.

The star-spangled swastika: how Nazi science and ideology shaped the American future

Mark Creeger

Red 5

Who was responsible for those found guilty at Nuremburg receiving work contracts from the US government? How did Nazi scientists who performed horrendous experiments on concentration camp inmates become highly regarded scientists in America? Why did America pursue, achieve and exceed the same goals as the brightest minds of the Third Reich?

Promoting a positive view of Jewish communities to combat antisemitism

WJC Diplomatic Corps

Red 2

One of the most effective ways of 'fighting antisemitism' is to promote Jewish values. As we constantly struggle to show others that antisemitism is wrong, we must also enable the value of our community to inspire others and empower ourselves.
