'Doubly exceptional': Being Jewish and disabled

In the Jewish community, attitudes vary towards people with disabilities. As a Jewish person with an invisible disability, Leonora is a member of a minority within a minority. In this session we hope to share stories of good and bad experiences and to talk about ways to navigate being doubly exceptional.

Herbert Morrison: A friend of the Jews, xenophobic or antisemitic?

Lesley will consider the prominent Labour Party politician Herbert Morrison’s attitude to Jews between 1936 and 1945. Morrison was Home Secretary from 1940 to 1945 and was responsible for implementing government policy on internment, on the admission of Jewish refugees and responding to fascist antisemitic activities.

History of the Jewish hotels and guesthouses of Bournemouth

The talk will describe the rise and decline of the Jewish holiday trade in Bournemouth, set within the context of Anglo-Jewish history and the development of the town as a premier resort. It will explore various aspects of hotel life and the people who ran them, before sharing some of the wonderful anecdotes and memories included in Pam's book.

The buried raging sermons of the Warsaw Ghetto Rebbe

A group of writers in the Warsaw Ghetto, known as the Oyneg Shabbes collective, buried thousands of documents in resistance to Nazi oppression. Included was a manuscript of sermons delivered in the Ghetto by Rabbi Kalonymous Kalman Shapira, a rare testament to one human being’s theological struggle with the incomprehensible evil of the Holocaust.
